CriticaLink

Abstract

CriticaLink: Uber for emergency services.

Imagine you're driving home with your family when another vehicle runs through a stop sign and slams right into you. As soon as you realize what's happened, you reach for your phone to call for help. Who do you call? If you're in the US, you know you can dial "911" and paramedics will arrive within minutes. But if you're part of the 92% of the world that lives without access to emergency medical services (EMS), there is no one to call for help.

Each year, road accidents and injuries kill more than 6 million people worldwide, with 5.8 million of these deaths occurring in low and middle income countries without access to EMS. In these countries, it is estimated that more than 82% of accident victims die before they reach the hospital, many of whom could have been saved if they had faster access to basic medical care at the scene of the accident.

CriticaLink was founded in Bangladesh in March 2014 as a social business start-up with the goal of saving lives by training volunteer First Responders and using an innovative mobile app to alert trained volunteers when someone nearby needs their help. Like Uber, it uses location-based technology to find the closest First Responder, but instead of getting a ride, someone is coming to save your life.

The CriticaLink mobile app was launched in November 2014 and is currently covering eight urban communities in Bangladesh (serving approximately 3.5 million people), and will launch in South Africa in March 2015. Named by the Washington Post as one of “7 Admirable Start-ups Driving Social Change” CriticaLink was selected as the winner of the 2015 Bangladesh National App Award before going on to win the 2015 United Nations World Summit Award in Health.

CriticaLink aims to create a low-cost, scalable platform that can improve access to rapid emergency services all over the world. We believe that no matter who you are or where you are in the world, every person should have help when they need it the most.
