A natural sand island will require side slopes of at least 15 horizontal to 1 vertical requiring significant quantities of sand plus possible erosion protection. Hydrostatically Supported Sand Islands (HSSI) technology produces near- vertical side slopes thus greatly reducing the quantity of sand and provide protection against the erosion of the sand during storms and rough water.

The technology of HSSS is simple and was first tested in the laboratory in 0.5 m and 2 m water depths and then a prototype was constructed in a 15 m water depth and strong tidal currents off the South Coast of England.

The near vertical slopes on all sides of the island mean that ships and floating equipment can moor along all edges of the island for simple loading of heavy equipment. The key personnel that developed this technology are available through SEEDA Inc.
