ZikAway

Abstract

ZikAway is a fashionable braided bracelet made from water hyacinth with the feature of repelling insects through citronella oil. Most mosquito repellents in the Philippine market contain DEET (diethyltoluamide), a toxic chemical. Therefore, the business will utilize organic citronella oil and invasive plants to create a product that can protect the environment, create livelihood, and prevent mosquito-borne diseases.

Who is your customer?

Our primary target market are millennials and/or tourists and travelers who are always on the go who would like to protect themselves from mosquito-borne diseases while being fashionable. But our product can be used by anyone from ages 5 and up.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

The ZikAway bracelet helps protect the environment, create livelihood, and prevent mosquito-borne diseases. The bracelet utilizes biodegradable materials such as an invasive aquatic plant (water hyacinth) and citronella oil to create a fashionable bracelet that can prevent mosquito bites. The business will also create livelihood for many Filipinos who would want to help in creating these beautifully handcrafted bracelets with a purpose.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

The ZikAway bracelet is 100% biodegrable, helps protect the environment, create livelihood, and prevent mosquito-borne diseases. All this combined, as well as the bracelet’s indigenous design which is attractive to tourists and millenials (according to our surveys) helps ensure the marketability of our product in out nation and possibly even abroad.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

Our team is composed of top students in the field of Marketing and Entrepreneurship. We have been shortlisted in national and international competitions such as the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Global Student Challenge where we won the Silver Award and the ASEAN Young Socialpreneurs Program where we took home the Gold Award. More than that, our team is committed into making this business a reality, because we believe that ZikAway is more than just a business concept. ZikAway has a purpose, a purpose to help, build lives, and make a difference.
