BLITAB

Abstract

BLITAB Technology Ltd. developed the World’s first tactile tablet, using a revolutionary new liquid-based technology to create tactile relief outputting braille, graphics and maps for the blind and partially sighted.

We call it BLITAB® – the “iPad” for the blind.

BLITAB® is the first-ever Braille tablet, using an innovative exponential technology to create tactile relief outputting braille, graphics and maps for blind and partially sighted people. It is a next generation affordable multi-functional device for Braille reading and writing that displays one whole page Braille text, without any mechanical elements. For the first time tactile graphics can be output on a digital device and this opens a complete new world of content. BLITAB® brings a tremendous positive change in access to graphics and tactile media at minimal end user costs and changes the leisure, educational and life experience of blind and visually impaired.

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

Worldwide there are more than 295 million blind and visually impaired people, a number that is expected to double by 2020 (WHO, 2012).And there are currently 150 million people using Braille around the world. Fewer than 1% of the two million visually impaired people in the UK are users of Braille (BBC,2012). Fewer than 10% of the 1.3 million legally blind people in the US read Braille and just 10% of blind children are learning Braille (NFB report). The combination of new technology, ongoing efforts to simplify Braille code, and the removal of complexity in the delivery of Braille will ensure more people have access to Braille and that it remains relevant. If we take only 1% of the total market share and take into account the average sales per customer ($1500), we will realize that we are sitting on a quarter billion dollar business market potential.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Only 1% of all published books are available in Braille, the fundamental tool for education and literacy of blind people. The correlation between a Braille user and being in employment is over 90%; for those with no usable sight that enables print reading, Braille makes the difference between employment and educational attainment. Many efforts have been made in providing more content in Braille, traditionally in hard copy form. More recently, the challenge has been to deliver a solution that enables more people to access electronic Braille display technology. In the developed world, the unemployment rate in the blind and partially sighted population stands at over 75% of the working age population and, as a result of the relative difficulty in obtaining Braille, as well as the lack of knowledge in the education systems, Braille teaching is declining.
