The Mobile Abattoir

Abstract

The mobile abattoir is an innovative idea that is designed to revolutionize the meat industry in Ghana. Ruminants from which most restaurants depend on for meat are rared in the three northern regions of Ghana in the deep villages. This is a lucrative business but the existing model has created so much losers than winners, village farmers spend so much to get their animals to city markets where buyer are and end up selling it at minimal or no profit at all. The mobile abattoir is refrigerated van that will meet farmers right in the villages, buy animals and process the meat into our cold store van which then moves straight to the southern cities to be supplied to the target costumers. The mobile abattoir beats the current modes of meat businesses in terms of its minimal risk, high profit, environmental friendliness and reliability.

Who is your customer?

My costumers are the cold store operators, restaurants, hotels, boarding schools, kebab sellers and everyone that eats meat and meat products. Large section of the Ghanaian population consume meat and there are several restaurants, chop bars and canteens that run short of meat on daily bases especially the ones in the southern part of the country. All those people are my customers.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

There is high deficit of meat in the major cities in the southern part of Ghana and this has led to scarcity of meat as well as high cost of meat. The mobile abattoir will increase availability of meat at affordable prices as it employs a less expensive means of obtaining and transporting meat to the major cities of the Ghana. Also, many boarding schools and restaurants incur so much cost travelling to the northern part of the country to obtain meat to satisfy their customers and this cost is externalized at the end increasing cost of meat at every restaurant.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

The mobile abattoir will buy animals directly from the farmers thereby eliminating cost associated with middlemen or retailers. The idea involves slaughtering and processing meat right at the village market abattoir and transporting it in the deep freezer van, this method will enable more animals to be transported at a go using little space as compared to the existing method of transporting live animals. Also, the idea eliminates risk associated with loosing an animal or people in the city getting harmed by loosed cattle.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

A high volume refrigerated van will be rented from CF logistics in Accra-Ghana for the start until we are able to purchase one. Before the project starts, We will prepare a data base of contacts and locations of restaurants, hotels, chop bars, kebab sellers and schools that have shown interest for the product. Ones we start, the van will go to the north on weekly bases to buy and dress meat of ruminants and then return to supply to our customers. With the mobile abattoir, we will deliver meat to every costumer at his/her place of business with no extra charges which will save costumers cost and risk associated with transportation.
