Weight-Sensing Electric Skateboard

Abstract

We will be selling a weight-sensing electric skateboard called Shiftboard. Our target customers will be skateboard enthusiast, Hobbyist, high school and college-age students. Our product is a true weight-sensing electric skateboard, using the weight distribution of a person’s body, on the skateboard itself rather than weight hard to find sensing pads or a remote. When the rider leans forward on the skateboard the controller would pick up a difference in weight distribution between the front and back of the board, the controller would then accelerate the board forward in proportion to how much the rider is leaning toward the front of the board. As the rider leans back, when the skateboard is in motion, the controller would apply regenerative braking to the motors and bring the board to a stop. Currently, no other electric skateboard offers this unique weight-sensing feature across the entirety of the top of the deck. Having this feature will allow users to have the natural feeling of riding a typical skateboard, while also being hands-free.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Electric skateboards are a relatively new technology that is rapidly increasing in popularity. Currently, there is not a wide range of available products on the market. Many of the electric skateboards that are available right now use an RC-like controller that the rider uses to operate the board. Which is not intuitive.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Our board will be able to detect the distribution of a users weight. When the user shifts their weight forward or backward the board will respond to this difference by either accelerating or using regenerative braking to decelerate eliminating the use of a remote. This feature will be successful because currently, no other electric skateboards offer this feature.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

Our team is already close to completing our working prototype. From there we will make changes and refine the prototype until we have a product. Our advantage is that this product is a true weight-sensing electric skateboard, this will allow users have the natural feeling of riding a typical skateboard. Refining this defining feature will give us an advantage in this market.
