NosetsTM - Simplified Irrigation

Abstract

Yellow Beast (Pty) Ltd makes and sells NosetsTM - Simplified Irrigation, which is a unique precision irrigation product that is used in agricultural markets. The product uses machine learning to detect when water is needed in the ground and checks atmosphere for suitable conditions so that it can decide unaided when to apply water. This it accomplishes by using algorithms that are based on Machine Learning.

Who is your customer?

The customer comprises the following: Entry customer - large commercial farmer because they have the capacity to purchase novel technologies Adjacent segment customer - emerging commercial farmer because they often supply the commercial farmer with produce. 2nd adjacent segment - subsistence farmers, because once traction has been gained from the commercial farmers it can be used to raise funds for this segment because they are often rural.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

The recent droughts have resulted in the state introducing water restrictions in one of several areas in South Africa. As such, the hardest hit are farmers of crop because the ones with a significant water use footprint experience high costs for water and energy, and the subsistence market relies on unskilled labour for demand management practices. In some farming, water gets applied when unnecessary and this can occur when it is sunny, meaning water gets lost through evaporation; at times it is applied when the soil is already moist, and this means that crops can be harmed and the farmer incurs costs unnecessarily.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

The fact that our product does the decision making as to when to apply water based on machine learning means it is able to save the large farmer costs and provide ease of use. In other words, water, energy are saved, as well as crop health.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

We have a prototype which we have developed using cash grant received from the SAB Kickstart Ignite first prize win in 2016. The money has been directed towards business development. As such, we have 5 in our team, and the skills include professional decision scientists, engineers and researchers and founders. Our technology has IP registered to it.
