Smartbell: Making Gyms Smarter

Abstract

The current gym and fitness market is hyper-competitive and fragmented, so gyms often differentiate themselves from competition with unique membership promotions or participation in “amenity arms races” for things such as tanning beds or aqua massage tables. However, these enhancements are typically on the fringes of the gym, rarely on the gym floor, and don’t improve people’s workouts. Personal training isn’t affordable for most, and many gym-goers have trouble tracking their workouts or even knowing what muscle group to work out next. People are leaving gyms for unconventional fitness alternatives (Crossfit, rock climbing, etc.) as well as low-cost new entrants such as Planet Fitness. Additionally, gym maintenance and layout planning are often done by following examples from others, instinct, or feel. There’s rarely any data to back up high-impact, often costly, management and purchasing decisions. Smartbell solves this problem by providing gyms with a more engaging amenity for their members, so that it can increase member acquisition, improve member retention, engage with their members more effectively, boost personal training services, track equipment usage, and optimize gym layouts.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Smartbell offers a two-part solution to these problems: Smartbell Monitoring: By installing our streamlined monitoring modules on each piece of gym equipment, gym management can gain insights and visibility into gym utilization and flow patterns that they didn’t have previously. Each gym has access to a monitoring dashboard, which informs a number of key decisions such as maintenance cycles, purchasing, and layout planning. Additionally, by opting into the publicly-facing Crowd Control module, gyms can provide their members with peak times for their favorite area and equipment. In this module, our Smart Scheduler will take each member’s fitness goals and suggest the best times to hit the gym in order to workout that muscle group. Smartbell Workouts: Through our Workouts package, gyms can upgrade to smart equipment without replacing their equipment. By retrofitting existing gym equipment with our enhanced monitoring modules, gyms not only get the benefits of our Monitoring service but each gym’s member also gets their own “robo-trainer,” making tracking strength training workouts effortless. From the time a person walks through the door until the time they leave, all strength training data will be tracked and reported to them in real time using a combination of RFID, accelerometer, gyroscope, ultrasonic, and wireless technology. The gym gains enhanced user analytics along with the ability to upsell more personal training services. Personal trainers on staff could scale operations by tracking more users simultaneously, or, gym members can pay an additional subscription for Smartbell Training, which combines the latest chatbot and machine learning technology with the expertise of fitness consultants to provide personalized workout regimens based on the incorporation of patterns of other users with similar characteristics along with each member’s specific goals and workout data.
