PineCone is a mobile device app that uses the accelerometer and GPS capabilities of a smartphone to give position and location of other users with respect to each other on the trail. This device will detect and prevent possible collisions. When trail users are approaching each other at unsafe speeds, the app will alert the respective users of each other’s presence via an alarm on the cellphone of a hiker or a bluetooth connected bell on the handlebar of a cyclist. This alarm will be the indication to the user that they are approaching somebody on the trail ahead.

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

Hikers, bikers, trail runners, horseback riders and off-road motorcyclists (a.k.a all multi-purpose trail users). In addition I've also identified a potential use for backcountry skiing, snowmobiling and off-road ATV's

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

PineCone is a safety device. It will help reduce the number of collisions on multi-use trails. In addition, there is potential for increased avalanche safety by alerting backcountry ski/snowboard users of each others location while traveling in high risk terrain. According to my initial survey (34 respondents) conducted in the Park City Mountain Resort parking lot, 61% of the respondents had collisions, 88% thought collisions were a real problem and 100% would use a device that would warn them of other users on the trail.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Reducing the number of trail collisions and human to human accidents increases public safety. This will also lead to improved relations between the user groups. There is a well documented and long standing conflict between hikers and mountain bikers on multi-use trails. PineCone has the ability to improve this relationship by reducing "surprise factor" of a mountain biker encountering a hiker while riding fast.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

There is no competition in the live tracking/collision prevention space in the outdoor market. This is a novel idea that uses existing technologies to improve public safety. There are numerous applications for this type of technology and PineCone has the opportunity to be first to market. I am currently executing by being part of the Foundry. Weekly management reports keep me on task and the wealth of connections and resources help me solve problems and execute tasks efficiently. Please refer to the attached slides for summary of execution and survey results.
