One-Man Band

Abstract

One-Man Band is a mobile app that offers a marketplace of backing tracks for musicians. Essentially, karaoke for musical instruments, or Spotify for multi-tracks. User picks popular song from library, taps any instrument in song to mute it, and plays along with their instrument. We are sourcing multi-tracks from the internet and aggregating them in a single seamless experience that also offers chords, tabs, and sheets within the app to make practicing music more immersive, and easier. Studio musicians can even upload covers of popular songs, and then get a share of revenue when users buy those songs. App comes with free tracks, and then users pay per song, or pay for a monthly subscription in exchange for a discount on songs (similar to Amazon Audible model). We have experienced advisors on our board and are raising $200k to be used for music licensing ($50k already raised). We have been beta testing and are launching in October 2017. Who is your customer?

We are targeting musicians of all ages, skill levels, and instruments who already pay $3-6 for sheet music, MIDI-based backing tracks, and chord books. Based on the size of the sheet music industry, similar websites that do a fraction of what our service offers, and growing number of people who play a musical instrument, we project market size is ~$600M

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Musicians everywhere are looking for a way to play along to their favorite songs, without hearing the instrument in the song that they are trying to play. Websites offer multi-tracks, but they are hard to find, sometimes nonexistent, and have to be put together using music editing software for each instrument that needs a backing track. Similarly, websites that offer chords and tabs don't offer a way to provide high-quality, original backing tracks.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Our app is easy to use, and offers a simple solution that otherwise requires time and effort to put together. Combined with in-app chords, sheets, and tabs, our product becomes the end solution for all musician's practicing needs. They don't need 3 different tools from 3 different places for different prices, and can play any instrument, genre, or style. Everyone from a bedroom rockstar to a competitive clarinet player in an orchestra will find value from One-Man Band.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

Our team has 25 years of combined experience building successful IT products that are used by millions of people. Our CEO, Radomir, bought an accounting software company, grew it by a factor of 10, and then sold it successfully before moving to LA to be immersed in the music industry. Our software development team is headed by our CTO, Vadym, and is based out of Ukraine, with experience building software applications that operate at scale. Jose, head of business development, has experience working at a venture firm and as a software engineer in the financial industry. We are all avid musicians. We have currently raised $50k out of a $200k seed round to fund licensing of music rights (the biggest hurdle), and have an advisory team comprising of the founder of MTV Ukraine, an ex-director at EA who worked with Activision to license the music rights for guitar hero, and a VP at Pandora.
