Abstract

Pressure injuries are common, preventable, and extremely unpleasant for patients to endure. Pressure injuries are particularly prevalent among certain populations, such as seniors, patients in palliative care, patients with spinal injuries, and patients in long term care. With a prevalence of 26% of hospitalized Ontario patients; the problem is significant, but the solutions are limited. Once developed, pressure ulcers are difficult to treat and slow to heal. With treatment costs upwards of $128,000 and an average of $48,000; the duality of the problem is evident. This a 15 billion dollar problem that plaques our health care institutions, yearly, in North America. If you couldn't think this problem is bad enough 7 people die from them every hour. Pressure injuries are also tremendously expensive and time intensive for health care providers to treat. Despite being such a serious issue, data on pressure injuries can be inconsistent, and data for particular regions can be hard to find at all. But the status quo need not continue.

Meet Curiato’s Ceylon Pressure Redistribution System.Real time insights on patient care, reactive and proactive pressure redistribution system tailored for each patient, paperless tracking of bedsore data. Curiato has come up with a revolutionary way of preventing pressure injuries through our pressure redistribution system, called Ceylon systems. A combination of both a smart mattress and bedsore management interface, which is connected to a Patient Information Web Portal (PIWP). The mattress allows for targeted pressure redistribution for staff and actively detects potential bedsores. While preventing bedsores, our interface, provides valuable data to caregivers and families so they can take a more informed action. The map can then be provided to related devices using IoT-incorporated cloud technology. The Ceylon system mattress uses biometrics, processed by our machine learning algorithms, to plan a unique pressure redistribution pattern, through the low-pressure air pockets. This will not only allow for maximal comfort for the patient, but also provide care givers, occupational therapist and family members with real time updates on the patient’s condition. This will enable administrators to allocate their resources most efficiently, to save money and ultimately improve patient care. And save 7 deaths every hour.

As the senior population expands over the next several years, achieving efficiency in pressure ulcer prevention is absolutely critical for healthcare providers. Ceylon Systems will be the first patented smart mattress bedsore prevention system that will be able to predict and adjust to high-risk bedsore zones on its own. Our technology will centralize the data collection process and allow for a streamlined analysis, with instantaneous preventative responses from our pressure redistribution system. What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

No one has come up with a cohesive offering. We're looking at it from an engineering standpoint to combine technologies in a way that can reduce costs. We want to change the way support surfaces are seen. Instead we use clinical judgment, risk assessment tools and knowledge of the features and benefits of existing support surface technologies to guide our decisions. Surface selection requires a holistic approach for successful intervention. We have to take into account the individual needs of the patient, existing risk factors, the wound presentation itself, and operational issues such as cost, availability, safety and access. Selecting a surface is based on more than a risk score or staging (what is currently used today). It’s based on a combination of factors involving the patient, environment and current scientific knowledge. Surface selection is as complex as dressing selection. We don’t select a dressing based on the stage of a wound or a risk score alone. We select a dressing based on the wound presentation and recognize that this is not a static process. Risk factors may change. The stage of a wound is one piece of the investigative puzzle. Which is why we need a dynamic surface that adapts and is able to pick up on trends of the patient. The aging population has been identified as one of the major factors driving the growth of this market. The market for pressure injury treatment products is also witnessing the introduction of innovative mattresses and beds for treatment. Shift in trends towards home based care is also driving the demand for such products.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

The founders and members of Curiato all have close family members that have been affected by pressure injures. They understand the additional personal stress and financial constraints that arise from pressure injuries on a personal level. The motivation to create impactful and meaningful solutions arise from understanding the depth and significance of the problem and how it affects individuals from multiple perspectives. It is important to understand the legal, personal, institutional and economical financial stress the problem causes and how it can be mitigated via innovating well researched solutions. Our solution is a validation and result of talking to affected individuals, which include patients, nurses, therapeutic practitioners, managers and caregivers. Understanding their pain-points and developing an impactful solution that mitigates the problem from multiple perspective is what we strive for at Curiato.
