loom

Abstract

Loom is an app that allows people to easily create and curate their digital heirlooms. This can mean anything from voice memos, recipes, favorite videos, and more. We connect people to their closest loved ones and provide them a sacred and intimate place to gather and share lasting memories. Loom helps people to easily collect mementos from relatives, the internet, and the shoebox under their beds to bring together the things they want to share from previous generations to future ones. Our platform also provides personalized prompts crafted by content experts designed to help families build their stories. This is to provide hands-on support to help families explore their heritage, record artifacts, and share legacies with those they love.

Our app helps people organize and store their heirlooms in a way that helps them engage with their family’s story. Not only will loom help people maintain their digital heirlooms by categories, or “pockets,” like special recipes, unforgettable audio, meaningful videos, favorite photos and a pop culture timeline, but loom will also prompt users with unique questions, based in our algorithm, that is rooted in Social Work practices of dignity and collaborative family therapy.

These prompts are written to support users to dive deeper into the meaning and values within and behind their heirloom. Once they respond to these prompts they will live on the person’s profile or attach to their heirloom to make it easy for them to pass down a piece of their story through of their family lineage.

With loom, a grandfather in Berkeley could record his story and instantly share it with his grandchildren all over the world. With the questions provided, they can discuss his story in a meaningful way. For example, the grandchildren could use loom to ask their parents to tell them more about what their grandfather was like. Our friends and families, as well as the hundred of people we have interviewed, have told us over and over again that loom is a valuable product they want to use.

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

Our target population is the "sandwich population," those ages 40-65 who have living children and living parents they would like to share heirlooms between.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

In a time when families live far apart and are busier than ever, taking time to document memories falls through the cracks. In addition to losing someone’s physical presence, families face the possibility of missing out on the knowledge and history loved ones hold.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

We have conducted over 100 in-person interviews and 200 surveys that show people want this product. They want to share their stories with their closest loved ones and want guidance on how to collect and share their heirlooms. We know our customer and our market extremely well and are creating a product that people want.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

This product will be successful because we are the first in the market. We are playing with many different spaces: social media, therapy, personality testing, heritage collecting, etc. However, nothing in the market currently combines all of these attributes in one easy-to-use application. Furthermore, now is the right time! People are more interested in heritage than ever. Also, with such an aging population in the world, and with people living longer than ever, we see how crucial it is to capture older generations' stories to pass down.
