Abstract

Imagine a social platform that connects businesses in need of recycled materials to companies that have excess of those materials and vice versa. Scrap is the collaboration point for business to business material sourcing solutions; all while being sustainable and spearheading the green movement. For the US to be considered “sustainable”, 75% of all manufactured materials should be recycled. Right now we lurk near 22%. Thousands of companies worldwide always have excess and scrap materials; it’s the cost of manufacturing. The platform is incredibly easy to use and 9 out of 10 surveyed businesses recommend Scrap. Here’s how it works: You, the business owner or representative, can post a listing of your scrap materials like plastic, metal, and wood. Other businesses will then see your listing, and buy your scrap. You make money, your business recycles, and the buyer gets the honor of buying & using recycled materials. Scrap is a social platform that assists in solving your problems while participating in the reduce, reuse, recycle movement. By making information, resources, and all-things-ecological public information for our users; Scrap can lead the future of sustainability by actively and effectively helping businesses, both large and small, to make the transition to being green. Who is your customer?

Being a primarily business to business company, our target customer base consists of manufacturers and small businesses; ideally locally-owned “Mom & Pop Shops”. The majority of buyers will be manufacturers in or looking to be in the sustainability space. The majority of sellers will ideally range from small, locally-owned businesses with owners passionate, or wanting to be, about recycling, all the way up to big manufacturing companies that produce scrap materials on a daily basis. The minority of sellers would be made up of everyday people and big one-time events (concerts, sporting events, etc.).

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

In a world with excessive amounts of waste, it is becoming more and more crucial to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Scrap is changing the game when it comes to this problem, because not only will it ensure reduction of huge amounts of waste, but it also incentivises recycling. Scrap relieves businesses of the financial burden of waste management where excess and scrap goods can be recycled for profit, and in some cases tax incentives. In the long run, this social platform will also create jobs, reduce costs for small businesses, and will make recycling easy for everyone, all while spearheading the green movement.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

The Scrap platform was created on the basis of solving a world-wide problem. The four founders of Scrap, who make up students and leaders in the United States, saw how difficult it is to live a minimal waste lifestyle and our platform is going to change that. It is seen throughout history that a common person is more inclined to do what is easy. By making Scrap accessible to anyone, anywhere regardless of financial status we can ensure the growth of a connected world-wide sustainability platform. Education is a huge part of implementation of a new idea inside of any market and we believe that by making our research public knowledge, we can help educate the world on how to be sustainable. Scrap is going to solve the world’s problem of creating too much waste by making it easy for the common person to recycle.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

Our team is comprised of 4 Students at the University of Utah with many different disciplines and backgrounds ranging from Multi-disciplinary design to Peace and Conflict Studies to Entrepreneurship. We believe that a solid foundation in our company ethics, responsibilities, and morals will allow Scrap to work with those in the Industry who want the same thing: A Sustainable Future. As many say, execution is everything which is why we are already starting to build a solid foundation for Scrap with a research-backed business idea, model, and ultimately a plan. With our idea forming in the Entrepreneurship 1010 class, we received the validation we needed by being the grand prize winner of the Block U Symposium. Additionally, The Lassonde Institute and Lassonde Studios are an amazing resource that are aiding to building our foundation. We have been generously granted space in the Zion’s Bank Company Launch space through the Company Launch program. We are also given the honor of having two amazing Mentors through the process, Barclay Burns (an Entrepreneurship professor at the University of Utah) and Heather Kahlert (Eccles Business School Advisory Board and Philanthropist). When we consider other major players in this market, there aren’t any that have a focus of being purely online. In a modern day and age, we believe it is crucial to have a massive online presence with our business and this a major point why we believe Scrap has the power to change the world.
