Sacre Bleu!


Currently, 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean annually. Without significant action, there will be more plastic than fish by weight in the ocean by 2050. Beach goers are aware of this problem but very few feel motivated to clean up plastic from the beach. Beach cleaning should not be left to just our local governments, but that everyone should feel a responsibility and have a connection with the environment around us.

To address this issue, we have developed Sacre Bleu!, a community based effort which incentivizes beach goers to clean up plastic waste from the beach. Sacre Blue! wants to create communities around the common goal of plastic free beaches and oceans, empower local businesses and individuals to take part in this effort, to educate about plastic waste and its potential uses, and give back to the community. This is all achieved through our unique network of local businesses, beach goers, and the technology developed by Sacre Blue!, namely our smart recycling bins, online platform, and rewards system. Beach goers can collect waste from the beach, deposit it into one of our smart bins and collect points. They can cash in their points to receive discounts from local beach businesses, which in turn encourages beach goers to support the local business with their patronage. Coastal businesses are interested in our platform because it helps them build a continuous customer base, provides them with marketing space on the digital platform, and gives them access to customer data. Similar digital loyalty systems already exist and are successful. Our loyalty system addresses a different market segment, namely coastal areas and people willing to put in a little effort to receive rewards.

Beach clean-up projects can cost millions of dollars per year. Our comparative advantage over other recycling incentivizing systems and initiatives is our ability to create a personal connection between beach goers and local beach businesses, over a common goal, namely a plastic free beach. For the beach goers, their beach experience will improve while earning discount, while beach businesses will increase their income due to positive branding and increased clientele. What is really unique about Sacre Blue! is beach goers who are depositing plastic waste into our smart bins can see where their waste is going and what interesting products it will be turned into.

Sacre Bleu!’s financial model includes several sources of revenue including the above-mentioned subscription packages, advertising space on our associated smart bins and sales commission for smart bins sold to our partner municipalities.

Who is your customer?

Sacre Blue has users and customers. Our user is anyone willing to collect plastic waste from the beaches and willing to deposit it in one of our smart bins. This user has an account with Sacre Blue!, where it is recorded that they collected waste and deposited it into our bin. Our customer are businesses willing to offer our users discounts, rebates, free goods, discounted or free services etc. Our initial target communities will be set up around beach towns and coastal areas, so our customers could be restaurants, bars, hotels, water-sports businesses, retailers etc. We would like to work with businesses who are using recycled plastic in their products, and advertise these products on our platform and on our smart bins.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

There is currently no incentive for people to collect waste and deposit it in a waste receptacle. Many people are willing to throw away their own trash, but few are willing to collect trash they find laying around. Sacre Blue! wants to change this. We want to bring together the communities who depend on clean waters and clean beaches for their lively hoods, and empower them to help keep our waters and beaches waste free.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

There are many reasons why we believe Sacre Blue will be successful. Our users are looking for several things when they go to the beach. They want to see clean beaches and water, they want to relax, and they want to enjoy their time by the ocean. These beach goers are willing to collect beach waste if we are able to reward them in some way. This is what makes Sacre Blue! unique. We are able to offer these beach goers discounts and freebies if they collect waste from the beach and water. We want these beach goers to see where the plastic waste they collecting goes and what it can be turned into. It would be possible to buy or receive these products as rewards for collecting waste. We want to work with businesses that are turning plastic waste into new products and advertise these products to our users. We also want to work with local businesses who depend on clean beaches and oceans for their livelihoods, to advertise for them and bring customers to their business. This is done by them offering rewards to those people who help to keep their communities clean.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

We have a dynamic team from three different countries with experience in ocean biology, engineering, business, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. We all have a passion for the ocean, and want to see it stay clean and healthy. We have close relationships to the local communities that we want to target first to get our project off the ground and we have contacts in several key areas such as the local municipalities, local businesses and companies creating goods from recycled plastic. Our engineering experience will get the technology that we need successfully implemented and the business experience is crucial to successfully implementing all aspects of this project.
