Bearly Dancing

Abstract

Bearly Dancing is a rhythm rpg video game. It combines a quirky narrative and role playing elements with an engaging music battle system. Instead of playing patterns with little meaning that are set over music, play the actual music with your keyboard. Bearly Dancing's music is randomly generated with a unique theme for each character you encounter.

Bearly Dancing has a demo released at bearlydancing.com and will tentatively be on steam in one year.

Who is your customer?

My customer is anybody with a computer and an interest in video games.. Specifically, Bearly Dancing has a strong appeal to the large rhythm gaming community. Recent rhythm games that have combined music with other genres have been very successful. A great example of this is the game Crypt of the Necrodancer. Results of the demo of the game suggest people who have played indie games before have a much stronger interest in the game.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

My primary motivation for creating Bearly Dancing is the movement towards video games as an art, as a dynamic and interactive experience unlike any art form before. There exists a large market in the rpg/rhythm genre that is not being fulfilled by the currently released games. Bearly Dancing seeks to push the boundary of this corner of the video game market.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Bearly Dancing's quirky, satirical story line is its most valuable asset. The unique world that it presents the player will make it something loved. Often, indie games travel through word of mouth or social media, and this is a key feature that allows it to travel. On the flip side, a game has to have solid mechanics to be fun. Bearly Dancing lets you play the music yourself- it becomes an instrument as it teaches you to navigate different patterns, rewarding you with new music theory that makes the game more interesting.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

In order to make this product successful, I have to continue consistently putting my time and care into the project. Bearly Dancing already has two years of history on github (github.com/oflatt) and has come a long way. I will continue to overcome future challenges- I plan in the next month to add new enemies to the new snow region, and to clean up some code for the beatmap generation. I am now an expert in pygame in python- my edge over competitors is the time I spent building an infrastructure of the game over the last two years. Essential to my success is the capital to begin marketing the game. Bearly Dancing cannot be successful if when it releases, nobody knows about it.
