Honey Flow Africa


Honey Flow Africa is leading a new revolution in bee keeping that improves predictability in bee keeping, honey production and honey processing. We are a team of Nigerian engineers and scientists who are passionate about honey and honey bee sustainability. We are on a mission to improve the quality and availability of both organic honey produce whilst creating wealth for a generation of youth bee farmers.

Honey Flow Africa is bringing the power of IoT (Internet of Things) to help digitize beekeeping. Moving from calendar-based decisions to data-driven solutions helps optimize beekeeping operations and keep healthy bees. Honey Flow Africa’s team in the future will support small scale beekeepers and hobbyists as well as huge African commercial beekeepers to embrace a modern approach in caring for their bees.

Who is your customer?

Naturally, the target market of those who are the end consumer of commercial bee farm produce and also those who benefits from the business value chain of the bee farming and honey production industry is all encompassing. Every household consumes produce from commercial bee farms be it honey, royal jelly, bees’ wax, propolis, or other bee products. In essence a commercial bee farmer should be able to sell his or her produce to as many people and food manufacturing companies as possible. In view of that, we have positioned our business to attract consumers of honey and other related products not just in Nigeria alone but also other parts of the world. We have conducted our market research and survey and we will ensure that we meet and surpass the expectations we set for the business. Below is a list of customers that we will market our live bees and honey to; Households Individuals Food Manufacturing Companies Restaurants Fast food eateries Agriculture merchants

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

There is high demand and low supply of honey in Nigeria. Approximately 2 million of liters of honey is produced every year in Nigeria and more than N3 billion is imported from China annually. There is a lack of bee farmers in Nigeria coupled with outdated traditional harvesting and processing techniques, which often lead to poor-quality honey. It usually takes 24hrs to 72 hours to process honey from a single beehive. Honey processing equipment can cost between N500K to N16M. The distance and lack of data makes it difficult to monitor the activity of the bees and the integrity of beehives.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

We are using the "Flow Hive" that is a revolutionary beehive to harvest fresh honey without opening the beehive and minimal disturbance to the bees. Less labour, more love. It takes less than 3 hours to harvest honey from a single beehive by just turning a tap, "Honey on Tap". No mess, no fuss, no heavy lifting and no expensive processing equipment. We will be using the power of IoT to monitor our beehives in real time. We will be able to measure temperature, humidity, swarm alerts, queenless hive, barometric pressure, audio playback and a host of other features to monitor the beehive in real time using AI and data science.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

We are a team of beekeepers, engineers, scientist and researchers and we've studied the problems of beekeeping as it affects beekeepers in Nigeria & we've discovered it's best to leverage technology as the solution to improving beekeeping. Our team is well equipped with vast knowledge and expertise to deploy and effectively manage hives & data gotten from each beehive or beekeeper to improve production using the power of IoT and AI. In our work, we are using advanced technologies, centered around the reestablishment of a caring relationship with nature. Starting by saving the honeybees, we strive to expand our portfolio of innovative products and services and deliver a measurable impact to all farmers in the broader agricultural sector.
