Mesopaper

Abstract

Mesopaper exists to provide simple, safe, and sustainable arsenic-free and lead-free drinking water solutions. Arsenic and lead in water threatens the health of hundreds of million people around the globe. Effects of these contaminants are linked to cancer, lower IQ, and increased anti-social behavior and higher criminality. Current available technologies are not accessible to lower-income populations and often exacerbate the problem. Our revolutionary product, Mesopaper, uses natural inputs to filter out contaminants through an NSF certified, affordable, and environmentally friendly sheet of paper. Mesopaper is easy for anyone to use and does not produce any negative by-products.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

The United States’ Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry rates arsenic and lead as the top two priority substances. Yet, approximately 10% of all U.S. groundwater sources measure above recommended levels of arsenic contaminants. Eighteen million Americans live in areas supplied by systems that are in violation of lead and copper laws. In China, 22% of children have blood lead levels significantly above the recommended amount. Worldwide, 200 million people in over 50 countries are exposed to arsenic through drinking water. Particularly for households with children, contaminated water is a major concern. Arsenic is a known carcinogen linked to cardiovascular disease and diabetes . Prolonged exposure to lead leads to decreased kidney function and reproductive problems in adults and developmental issues and anemia in children. A complete infrastructure replacement nationwide would take at least 50 years; families need options now. Clean water is also critical for individuals and households after natural disasters, when municipal water systems fail. Current filtration technologies are usually bulky, costly, and wasteful, and most do not remove arsenic or lead.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Our direct-to-consumer product is Mesopaper, a disruptive technology that allows customers to simply filter the polluted water through a thin sheet of paper, made of three layers: a nano-ceramic material, sandwiched between two layers of natural, bamboo fibers. The paper is capable of removing 99% of contaminants, including arsenic, lead, and other heavy metals without using chemicals, electricity, or pressure. Our process is completely safe: no contaminants leach back into the environment and the paper is environmentally friendly and biodegradable. Mesopaper utilizes inexpensive, natural raw materials including ceramic and bamboo to create a product that filters out 99% of contaminants, generates zero wastewater, and yields only compact food-grade, biodegradable waste.

We have secured the global distribution rights specifically for personal, direct-to-consumer use, including the patent license, trademark, and NSF certification package for Mesopaper from Mesofilter, Inc., the inventor and patent holder.
