BOLT-Biomaterial Based Lethal Ovitr

Abstract

BOLT is a low-impact, environmentally friendly ovitrap made exclusively with biomaterials. It is designed to be completely biodegradable, avoiding chemical insecticides, and it has the key innovation related to the use of a gel based on water and cellulose. In order to eliminate eggs and adults, Beauveria bassiana fungi (a non-toxic mushroom for humans and other animals) is used, without any contraindications, and it does not develop resistance in mosquitos. The concept is simple: the mosquito is attracted to enter the trap where it finds the gel, an ideal place for the eggs since it simulates the optimal deposition conditions preferred by the tiger mosquito. But the gel has been designed also to be the optimal substrate for the Bouveria Bassiana fungi, which infects both the eggs and the adult and kill them after a short time. The gel performs the double deposition and matrix substrate function for the bioinseticide because it is super-absorbent and biocompatible. Thanks to the use of biomaterials and the gel characteristics, it is advantageous to use the trap since it biodegrades without adding water or chemical insecticide, differently from those currently available on the market.
