Who is your customer?

Our target market is consumers who recreate or work outdoors. More specifically we will target consumers in high risk areas of the Northeast and Mid-west. High risk areas will be determined based on the annual number of reported Lyme disease cases from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). This includes gardeners, lawn care, hiking, fishing, hunting, sports (soccer, football, etc.) and golfing.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Lyme disease is the most common and fastest growing vector borne disease in the United States. Each year, approximately 300,000 new cases of Lyme disease are reported to the CDC. Currently, consumers use products that contain DEET or permethrin, however these products have been identified as neurotoxins, mutagens and carcinogenic. Products containing these chemicals are harmful to a human’s skin and are not safe for use by children. In addition, current insect repellents on the market are geared towards reducing mosquito bites rather than specific for tick bites. With the growing incidences of Lyme disease and medical issues with current tick repellents containing DEET and permethrin, we were inspired to develop an all-natural tick repellent safe for children, families and pets. This product will aid in the reduction of tick bites and incidences of Lyme disease across the United States. Furthermore, the addition of SPF will provide consumers with sun protection during times of high tick activity.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Based on market research, individuals participating in activities which put them at risk of a tick bite are not using repellents or engaging in protective measures. A main reason for not using current repellents is due to the active chemicals which have been identified as neurotoxins and carcinogens. Our product is made from all natural plant derived oils which pose no harm on to the user. Furthermore, children ages 5-8 are at highest risk for tick bites. This product will be a safe preventative lotion and sunscreen for parents and guardians to use on their children. In our current consumer market, families are seeking natural and organic alternatives to chemical application of foods and beauty products.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

Our product will be available to consumers online for purchase and in-stores. We will utilize social media marketing and google advertisement to create and expand our brand name. Currently, the laboratory is one of the largest tick testing facilities in the United States. We have over 5,000 customers which participate in tick testing. In addition, our current Facebook page for tick testing has over 10K likes which will give our product a starting base. We have found the topics on ticks posted on social media has a high engagement rate with our followers producing greater than 25K organic views. In addition, we have active licensing agreements with Cutter and marketing companies for a current tick testing kit which is in retail markets. Furthermore, we have presented our product to a large manufacturer currently in the lotion market space who is interested in the licensing the final product.
