Protectors of the Sea

Underwater garbage (Solid waste), of origin not specified / reported or known in Peru, has consequences on the marine ecosystem altering its equilibrium; faced with this problem and looking for an effective solution in this regard, the present project seeks to generate awareness among citizens, obtaining base information (baseline) to subsequently establish a waste recovery protocol. It will require the participation of scientific divers, artisanal, recreational and interested people, who will collect precise information about points of accumulation of said waste, the nature of the same, the main sources of origin and the direct effect on the ecosystem. It also seeks to involve directly affected people (such as fishermen, bathers, etc.) in order to generate a network of citizen scientists who receive the necessary training to generate information and maintain the scenic beauty of each area evaluated.

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

Customers will be people interested in getting involved in environmental solutions to detect and reduce marine debris through citizen science and obtaining knowledge about marine ecosystems, conservation of marine areas and training in recreational diving techniques; with this, the interest of the people in knowing the beauty, the main role and the fragility of marine environments will be fomented.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

The scarce of knowledge about which kind of marine debris there are in the seafloor of coastal ecosystems and where they are distributed hamper the possibility to monitor its impact on marine fauna. The idea to develop a red of divers along the coast will allow to characterize and trace marine debris, also, the information will be registered continually which will allow us register changes and patterns over time. Baseline information about marine debris, raise awareness about this one and the motivation to do a recreational activity as diving is, will make possible conserve healthy marine ecosystems and marine resources.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Similar idea have been developed by Project Aware, and many recreational divers have been engaged. Based in this antecedent, the idea to participate in solutions against pollution in the sea makes our project idea very attractive. Even more, the team work trained between recreational divers and local artisanal divers (i.g. fishermen) give to our project a bigger value because collect and characterize marine debris won’t be an activity only to have fun but also will be an activity to contribute with an specific community, keeping its marine ecosystems healthy and decreasing the effect of this marine debris over the functioning of these ecosystems.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

Our team will be the bridge between recreational divers and artisanal divers and interested people; being the project an innovative way of teamwork in Peru. Our training as a scientific divers during university studies will give us the opportunity to train recreational divers and artisanal divers to monitor marine debris and its impact on marine ecosystems and biological diversity. Therefore, the activities deployed by artisanal and recreational divers will be monitored by us every so often with the aim of being update on our achievements and to give them any feedback about the performance of their activities to improve every step of our project. Unlike other campaigns to clean coastal ecosystems, our project won't be a single day or few days. The planning of our project seeks to establish a network of localities where we can deploy monitoring activities and at the same time these localities are considered as a dive sites. Thus, diving schools can promote the project as Ecofriendly.
