Silent Arrow / AVIUS

Abstract

Silent Arrow™ / AVIUS™ is a product line of biodegradable, heavy-payload, autonomous delivery Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) designed to inexpensively carry up to 1,000 pounds of critically needed supplies in support of domestic and international humanitarian relief operations and to military ground troops. The aircraft is an emissions free, disposable, folding-wing glider, and is launched through a game-changing delivery platform by being dropped out of standard transport aircraft such as C-130, C-17, C-5, V-22, CH-53 and other smaller cargo aircraft. Our proprietary wing construction materials are biodegradable, resulting in a mass production operation with high-volume, long-term sales implications that are sustainable, environmentally friendly, and lifesaving. The platform was developed with internal resources partially in response to the U.S. Government’s stated desire to cut airborne delivery costs 10x while increasing accuracy and incident response time, and additionally based on our desire to use modern technology to save lives and alleviate suffering and provide rapid access to food, water and medicine during disasters around the world.

In November, 2014, the Science & Technology Division of the United States Marine Corps approached Yates Electrospace Corporation (YEC) for an unconventional solution to resupply distributed ground troops stationed at remote deployments around the world. By applying modern UAV guidance and control technology to our existing aircraft and drone portfolio, we were able to quickly create a military resupply UAV called “Silent Arrow™” that met all of the Marine Corps’ operational requirements. After a site visit and preliminary design review at our China Lake, California R&D center in February, 2015, the U.S. Marine Corps awarded us a Phase 1 contract to begin production engineering on the military variant of our patent-pending , folding-wing, disposable UAV.

Our resupply UAV has numerous civilian applications for supply delivery and disaster relief, especially in remote regions where geographical isolation and the lack of infrastructure hamper traditional ground-based relief efforts. In many foreign aid missions, it is desirable to use the outstanding glide ratio of AVIUS to provide a safe standoff distance, which is required to avoid airspace incursions. There is an additional civilian market for land & sea rescue operations, where the ability to inexpensively deliver supplies, medicine and equipment to within 100 feet of any distressed ship, hiker or other stranded or injured party anywhere on earth is desirable. Civil applications include firefighting resupply, forestry, commercial fishing and other activities.

Silent Arrow / AVIUS is the world’s only 1,000 pound payload, biodegradable delivery UAV. Other companies are working towards achieving an air delivery capability using drone technology such as Amazon Prime, Google Wing, and Matternet. However, these ventures are focused on delivering lightweight items that weigh in the range of 1-5 lbs, and their successful execution depends entirely on the cooperation and regulation-setting authority of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which rules currently prohibit such commercial drone deliveries. Our launch customer is the U.S. Military, who is not constrained by the civilian rules promulgated by the FAA. If and when the FAA allows such commercial unmanned air deliveries in the United States, we are positioned to serve that emerging market with powered and unpowered variations on our military platform to generate expanded revenues.

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

The United States Military, Other Government Agencies, Non-Government Organizations, Foreign militaries and organizations that specialize in disaster relief and humanitarian assistance.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Silent Arrow™ / AVIUS™ is a product line of biodegradable, heavy-payload, autonomous delivery Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) designed to inexpensively carry up to 1,000 pounds of critically needed supplies in support of domestic and international humanitarian relief operations and to military ground troops.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Silent Arrow / AVIUS is the world’s only 1,000 pound payload, biodegradable delivery UAV. It is designed to provide critical payloads in support of disaster relief and military operations. We believe it will be successful because a demand has already been articulated by the U.S. Military.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

The mission of Yates Electrospace Corporation is to develop and build disruptive vehicles such as Silent Arrow that make a positive impact on our country. YEC has a proven history of delivering pioneering vehicles under austere cost and scheduling constraints. Our engineering team holds numerous national and world records and engineering “firsts” for similar development programs. YEC innovations have resulted in 12 US Patents on land vehicles and aircraft built in-house. The electric aircraft we recently designed and built was the first in history to break 200 MPH on battery power and received two FAI Louis Bleriot Medals for contributions to aerospace science. In 2012 our team was named “Pioneers of Aviation” by the State of California and we signed a CRADA with the U.S. Navy at China Lake where we are based, in order to explore defense applications of our IR suppressed electric airplane and mid-air recharging technology.
