BIOTIC - BioNanoPlastic

Abstract

BIOTIC, BioNano Plastic, is a plastic product based bio-synthetic polymer blend/hybrid which is reinforced with bionanofillers.This product, well-known as nanocomposite, is obtained from bio-synthetic polymer matrices and bionanofillers by means of solvent casting and injection molding. The objective of this proposed business is to produce plastic products with novel and superior properties as an alternative of products based synthetic plastic polymer. This innovation is obtained from laboratory research, literature studies, and is featured as one of the top 109 innovations in Indonesia. Polymers used in the hybrid are bio-polymers extracted from nature (chitosan, starch, collagen, protein, and natural resin) and recycled synthetic plastic polymers (polystyrene, polypropylene, polyurethane, polyvinyl alcohol, polymethyl methacrylate, and polylactic acid). To obtain enhanced chemical, physical, and mechanical properties, cellulose nanofibers isolated from biomass are commonly used as a reinforcing agent for the polymer hybrid. Final plastic products produced in this innovation can be used for food and packaging, automotive, pharmaceutical, optoelectronics, and furniture industries. The obtained plastics are eco-friendly, decomposable, biodegradable, renewable, and have excellent moisture and gas barrier, thermal stability, transparency, tensile strength, Young modulus, and elongation at break. In addition, the plastics can be incorporated with some additives that are intended to enhance the above properties of the plastics. Waste disposal of the plastics can be easily undertaken without polluting the environment, which includes land and ocean, and harming human health as well as threatening animal life.

Who is your customer?

The customers of this innovative project are environment − concerned people. The people will consider the importance of preserving the environment and their needs. They will use more eco-friendly and not costly plastic product, like BIOTIC, than synthetic plastics that can harm the environment and human health. The utilization of the plastics will persuade other people who don’t realize the importance of the environment, through word of mouth (positive testimonies) of the previous users of the plastics. The utilization of the plastic can be likely a campaign and education for human beings regarding the importance of BIOTIC for environmental preservation.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

As we know plastics wastes, which are not well-managed, will induce severe disasters and human health problems. The wastes are inexhaustible and mostly easy to be found in ocean and land, leading to the pollution of environment, infectious and chronic disease, and disasters (flooding and climate change). Indonesia is the second largest producer of plastic wastes and the wastes are abundantly disposed to ocean. As one of international commitments of Indonesia government, Indonesia has attempted to reduce 70% plastic wastes by 2025. This commitment has encouraged our team to promote BIOTIC products, which is aimed to accelerate the commitment of Indonesia government on plastic waste reduction. The BIOTIC products are applicable to be integrated in food and packaging, automotive, pharmaceutical, optoelectronics, and furniture industries. Considering the materials used for those industries will be useful for its implementation.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

As we know this plastic product, BIOTIC, is based on laboratory research and literature studies, and was awarded as one of the top 109th Indonesia innovation. Novel materials and technology integrated in this innovation will create success and sustainability of its implementation for industries. This material will be based on recycled synthetic plastic polymers combined with a nanomaterial and biopolymers. This BIOTIC product has excellent properties, including decomposable, biodegradable, renewable, moisture and gas barrier, thermal stability, transparency, tensile strength, modulus Young, and elongation at break. Due to those superior properties, this innovative material can be used to tackle the abundance of synthetic plastic waste burden and as the alternative synthetic plastic for the future. The plastic wastes, which are disposed abundantly in ocean and are harmful for environment and biodiversity, will be replaced with BIOTIC product. We do believe that this innovative product will be successful because this idea has not been yet implemented in Indonesia so that this innovation must be supported by both Indonesia and international institutions. Furthermore, this product has been implemented and studied at Bogor Agricultural University laboratories as one of the major research undertaken by our team.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

We have conducted a research about nanomaterials and nanocomposite films for food, packaging, and automotive industries for 4 years. We have also published some international journals related nanocomposite materials, and were awarded as the inventor of nanocomposite films. From the above experiences, we do believe that as the results of the research need to be translated into action (industrial applications) so that the research will be more useful for the development of plastic products based biomaterials. At the first stage, this research on nanocomposites for products based plastics should be implemented in Indonesia due to the problems of abundant plastic wastes without good management. In the phenomenon, we will do collaboration between our campus (Bogor Agricultural University) and plastic industries or related industries. The collaboration will be versatile for succeeding the introduction and marketing of the products. Our team (experts or researchers, academician, youth movement, and industrial people or businessmen) has a lot of experiences on environmental products marketing and production as well as collaboration so that we will be not worried to learn each other on succeeding the idea of being well-implemented.
