Rovilus

Abstract

Rovilus is a R&D based team specialized in battery and electric vehicle development. 1) overheat, 2) operation range, and 3) long charge time are three main issues for current battery technology. Therefore, we proposed a standardized battery design for light weight electric vehicle (LEV) mainly to enhance the urban mobility.

The first highlight is the innovative cooling technique with phase change material (PCM) and liquid cooled system, allowing 2 times more efficiency and lifetime compares to traditional air cooled battery. Also, the standardized battery design (48V, 10Ah) gives a wide range of customization for various types of vehicle application (from E-bike, scooter, motorcycle, to small car). It is similar to building a battery system like Lego blocks (series for higher voltage and parallel for larger capacity). Finally, the battery was designed to be quickly released from the vehicle and charged in the battery swapping station. We plan to build the battery swapping station across the urban area; this allows all electric vehicles using our batteries to enjoy the instant swapping service.

The concept will first be implemented through the indoor go kart facility. Electric karting is popular among the indoor track; however, due to the short battery range for current electric go kart, karting facilities need to purchase 2 to 3 times more vehicles compares to traditional outdoor gas kart. With the instant swapping and effective cooling battery design for our go kart model, Falcon 2.0, karting facilities will only need to get a battery swapping station and couple more batteries for their indoor track instead of vehicles. This will be a huge saving on initial vehicle cost and maintanence fee.

Who is your customer?

The current customers are the indoor karting facilties across the US and Autralia at the first stage of business. Later on, we would like to sell the battery with custom design service directly to indoor rental kart manufactures such as Sodi and Storm at the second stage. The potential customers will be electric scooter, electric motorcycle, and small electric vehicle manufactures for urban mobility. Other potential customers will be the old gas vehicle owners who would like to have their vehicles coverted to electric power.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

For vehicle manufacture: 1. Hard to design and implement battery from cell level to pack level for electric vehicle. For end user: 1. Overheat which reduces battery range, power output, and lifetime. 2. Long charging time for battery

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

The main competitive advantage is the innovative cooling system. Effective cooling for battery will allow a higher power output and lifetime, which can reduce the size and weight for the battery pack. With the cooling technology we proposed, it gives double of preformance comparing to air cooled battery, while maintain similar performance but much lower cost comparing to the liquid cooling technique for current commercial vehicles such as Tesla or GM Bolt. Phase change material (PCM) absorbs the heat generated from battery as latent heat. Latent heat is used to change the state of PCM from solid to liquid without temperature rise. PCM has high electrical resistence, large heat capacity, small volume expansion, and fast heat conduction, which contain all idea features for battery cooling. Then the copper tube wrapped around the PCM block will take the heat away from PCM block to the radiator.
