Plastic Smog Emissions Closed Loop


The Prevent Plastic Smog Emissions closed loop system stops waste micro plastic particles (beads and fibers) from being discharged into waterways and the oceans through the sewage system.

The closed loop system salvages dryer and washing machine lint and discarded micro beads to transform them into resources and products:

1. UpGyres consortium designs, builds, and distributes washing machine lint traps that stop microfibers from reaching water ways that flow into the ocean.

2. UpGyres will design, develop, and implement a zero-waste system for laundry and drying machine lint recovery and reutilization.

• Design and manufacture a Washing Machine Lint Trap

• Design and operate plastic collection equipment sales and licensing

• Design and implement a Closed Loop resource recovery model

• Use of waste micro fibers as raw materials to produce yarn

• Use of lint yarn to produce textiles

The Stop Plastic Smog Emissions Consortium closed loop system recovers micro plastic particles (beads and fibers) mitigating pollution of rivers and oceans and introduces a waste material into upcycled and recyclable design, architecture and construction product.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

We are on the eve of a revolution in the apparel and construction industries where new alternative fibers and design, architecture and building materials such as garment waste, and wood construction waste can be part of the solution to reduce the pressure on the world’s forests. Our closed loop system is expanding the scope of possibilities on alternative fibers and biocomposites as we explore and test whether the lowly and inconspicuous washing and dryer machine waste can become a replacement for forest fiber and virgin lumber in apparel and in construction materials.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

Our team is experienced in marine science, design, architecture, polymer and chemical engineering, business administration and project management. We have identified not only a fit in the market place of sustainable, upcycled, recyclable products and materials, but also that our product(s) contribute to the improvement of human and environmental health.
