Who is your customer?

The service provided by LONO is mainly an alternative cost effective option for the energy needs of households and local businesses. The additional service provided is sanitation as the biowaste is often time a public health hazard. The customers are therefore divided in 2 segments: 1) B2B Agro-industry Agro-production Cooperatives Sanitation authorities 2) B2C Households Restaurants Hotels Street Food

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Agricultural production is the most important income generating activity for rural populations in most of subsaharan Africa. This population also holds the largest proportion of people living in extreme poverty in the world. The problem we are trying to solve is therefore the current situation that agriculture does not generate enough net value for sub-sharan african farmers to bring them durably out of extreme poverty. LONO’s belief is that this can be solved by capturing the energy and mineral value in the biowaste from agricultural production and agro-processing and ensuring that it contributes to the net income of this target population. The target market will therefore be the energy and mineral fertiliser markets and will be targeted efficiently by recycling the low value biowaste on site.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

The waste to energy solutions have been executed around the world for decades in some countries but only a few and this has resulted in a very wide technology countries between regions. There is almost zero use of waste to energy technology in my home country of Côte d'Ivoire despite a large biowaste stream from the production of Cacao, Cashew, Banana and Palm. Our findings have been that this is largely due to the lack of a credible proposition of these technologies as a service to the producers of the biowaste. Both LONO's B2B and B2C solutions are to allow customers to substitute their current energy budget to receive an equivalent amount of energy at a lower cost, with added benefits such as sanitation, by renting the units or accepting monthly payments. Furthermore, the key technological properties of the B2C proposition KubeKo have been designed and tested by LONO’s R&D team.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

In order to bring these two concepts to market effectively, the LONO production team has two core skillsets: - Social impact assessment - Process engineering These skill sets therefore combine to have the social impact at the core of the engineering design of the solutions. This is particularly emphasised in the B2C solutions for households, SMEs and Cooperatives. Social Impact Assessment Is currently involved in multiple Social impact assessment studies and capacity building interventions amongst various cooperatives in Côte d’Ivoire. Has acquired good technical knowledge of the biomass and mineral fluxes in CI as the agricultural season progresses through the application of fertiliser and the harvest and export of a large portion of the production. Performs surveys to understand the key needs for social wellbeing of the target actors namely households, cooperatives, SMEs and Agro-processing personnel. Brings experience in ICT through long term collaboration with Smile CI and Smart-T both leaders in Open source software development in Côte d’Ivoire. Process Engineering R&D orientated approach to ensure that the product proposition is continuously improving and benefiting from the knowledge shared globally. Operates laboratory and pilot scale testing of different designs with different feedstock. Applies mathematical modelling experience to obtain globally relevant information for the valorisation of biowaste at household scale. Applies industrial process experience to prepare the large scale manufacturing of the B2C solution targeting the largest customer base (households). Has assessed and secured agricultural partnerships to improve the quality and reliability of the fertiliser produced during the energy production process. Has assessed and secured partnerships with external technology suppliers for the latest and most efficient solutions for Pyrolysis, Biomethane production and CHP generators.
