BretMaps

Abstract

BretMaps aims to offer a comprehensive, economic, app-based tool that aims to boost capability of the local emergency service to respond to major events (e.g. Earthquakes, floods, etc.).

This objective will be achieved by providing a tool that allows authorities and population to communicate in an efficient and effective way. The possibility for the authorities to send well-targeted warning, alert and best-practices reminder, together with the opportunity of receiving geo-referenced and complete help requests from the population will be at the base of a more complete and integrated emergency response system.

Who is your customer?

Our clients are responsive and interested into prevention, protection, security and risk management. Then, the target client is mainly the public administration (451 target municipalities to be penetrated) and, in addition, all the associations, volunteering or not, that act in the field of civil protection working on the rescuing intervention. Insurance companies are another potential client: during the last years they turned out to be very interested into disaster-based insurance policies. All of our services will be customised considering the special needs of every client.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Italian land is particularly exposed to natural disasters (such as earthquakes, fires, floods etc.), and avoid the disaster to come is often impossible. Reducing the extent of the damages and providing an efficient response are essential to reduce the impact of a disaster. Among all issues that affect emergency management, four appear to be the most relevant: 1) the poor awareness that the institutions have of the problems in their homeland; 2) stakeholder’s technological backwardness in relation to the modern mapping tools, that cause delays and inaccuracy in the rescuing interventions; 3) citizen’s lack of knowledge about best practices and appropriate behaviors to held in case of emergency; 4) poor communication between institutions and citizens. We propose a solution that addresses all of the above and consists of a platform through which the citizen will be able to report potentially risk situations with pictures, video and texts, and to get instant guidelines on how to behave in that situation, improving the communication between population and institutions. Right after the disaster occurs, updated maps will be provided both to citizens and to rescuers.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Our idea represents a cheap and sustainable solution to improve prevention and rescuing operations. It will be very easy to use, user friendly and quick. It will combine different kind of technologies to create value and make the administration more efficient and community more resilient. With the involvement of the insurance stakeholders, we will combine the efficiency of private sector, with the responsibility of public sector.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

All the members of the team have a strong commitment with the cause: we have been stricken by a disaster and/or have been serving during the rescuing operations. Everyone of us has an academic and personal background that makes her/him to be unique, adding a special value to the project itself. We found out to have the competences to face a gap we directly saw: it would be shameful for us not to fight for fixing it.
