Family Friendly Utah

Abstract

I am creating an app that connects families to appropriate events and destinations in their area. The events are listed on a searchable, filterable (by event type, distance from user, free vs. paid, etc) calendar.

Destinations include parks (searchable by distance, as well as amenities, features, or shade), fast food restaurants with play areas, children's clothing stores (new and used), etc. Users can flag problems with destinations, such as an early closure at a store, or an out-of-order splashpad at a park. Any user can remove the flags when the problems are resolved.

The app also contains a community section, where members can post their own events to the calendar (such as yard sales, car wash fundraisers, etc), and post announcements of interest (such as a great sale on children's clothes or canned beans). There is a marketplace where members can buy, sale, and trade children's clothes, supplies, etc). Lastly, there is an area for volunteer opportunities, searchable by age appropriateness. For example, a user can search volunteer opportunities within 10 miles that are suitable for 10-year-old children.

The last section is the Family section. It consists of a GPS locator of the child phone, persistent messaging, and shared reminders. The locator will simply return the location of the child phone to the parent user. Persistent messaging is a way to send a message from the parent phone that will stay on top on the child's phone screen until it is acknowledged by the child. The parent can change settings, to make it vibrate and/or ring at certain intervals until the message is acknowledged. Shared reminders are a way to send reminders to multiple family members at the same time. Any recipient can mark it as done. An example would be sending a reminder to both yourself and your spouse at 6 PM to pick up milk, or sending reminders to the entire family to take out the trash at 8 PM. Once the task is marked as complete by any user, the reminder goes away from all users.

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

Families with children.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Many events and destinations are not known to many families. This will open up ideas and options for these families.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

While some ideas, such as the GPS locator, exist in other apps, this app aims to be a low-cost "one stop shop" for many various features that exist, and a handful of features that do not yet exist.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

I have access to a large group of families that have expressed interest in this product, and I am working with a programming professional to augment my own skills to make this product a reality.
