From India With Love

Violence in the United States is no longer restricted to a certain neighbourhood but can happen anywhere and affect everyone regardless of social or economic status. Each year, over 13,500 Americans are killed due to gun violence, however over 43,000 commit suicide and over 100,000 are abused by an intimate

partner. Violence can therefore be categorized as a public health issue and there is an urgent need to design systemic solutions that make our cities and communities more safe and peaceful.

From India With Love is a strategic not for profit, social initiative that aspires to reinvigorate the nonviolence movement in the United States. We offer America’s civic leaders to experience India's culture

and thereafter support them in designing solutions that would enhance the quality of life in their communities and neighborhoods.

The initiative was inspired by the transformative journey that was undertaken by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., when in 1959, he had visited India to deepen his understanding of nonviolence. The trip to India had played a pivotal role in using nonviolent resistance during the Civil Rights movement. Upon his return, Dr. King wrote “I left India more convinced than ever before that the method of nonviolent resistance is the most potent weapon available to people in their struggle for freedom and human dignity. As a result of my

visit, my understanding of non-violence is greater and my commitment deeper.”

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Treating violence as a public health issue, we offer our unique immersive approach to a group of civic leaders to travel to India and study nonviolence and how it can be applied to promote nonviolence and compassion in their sphere of influence. This helps create cross sector solutions and partnerships.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

A committed group of civic leaders who are concerned about growing senseless violence and an authentic interest in deepening the understanding of nonviolence and promoting compassion are the two most important attributes for success. These two attributes will ensure that the trip to India is used as a catalyst and spring board to design solutions to improve compassion in USA. The actual work is after the trip as in the case of Dr. King.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

We have now prototyped our nonviolence education curriculum during three trips to India for a wide range of civic leaders from America including former gang members, police officers, mayors ,victims of violence and social activists. Through this experience, we are better aware of the challenges involved during the trip as well as those after the trip when leaders need to show commitment and dedication to implement the solutions that we have brainstormed.
