Community Development in Russia


Russian villages and small towns are disappearing with a huge speed. Youngsters leave to the big cities straight after school. Those who stay don't believe there is any future in their native villages or small towns. Altourism finds active people in these places, helps to find a project/initiative that could help this small town or village develop. Most of these projects contribute to the creation of the infrastructure. Together with the local activists, we organise tourist trips for people from big cities where they partake in the chosen project together with the locals. The rest of the trip program aims to create extra income for the locals. We rent rooms in the local's houses, pay locals to cook for us using locally grown products, etc. Our income comes from tourists who pay us for the trip.

Who is your customer?

My customers are Russian people living in Moscow and St.Petersburg. They are around 28-40 years old, middle management in big companies. They are looking for the meaning of life, showing their children real Russia, willing to be helpful and give back to the country that gave them a lot, curious to learn a new skill.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

The communal projects Altourism supports the change of the local people's mindset in the Russian villages and small towns.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

The most important attribute of success is to spread the information about Altourism and to engage people in the idea of supporting the local communities around the country. I present Altourism at various forums, conferences, and events. I gave a TEDx Talk last year.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

Altourism doesn't have direct competitors in the market yet. Indirect competition doesn't offer to engage with the local community. Altourism creates a new market and this is the biggest challenge for us.
