Integrated drinking water system

Abstract

Whole integrated safe drinking water system for Indonesia’s underserved areas. This integrative system consists of water pooling, facilities construction, water treatment, water distribution, and public health education related to drinking water quality. AMERTA employs a membrane filtration technology to support the water treatment process by purifying the water until it is of drinkable degree. To build and sustain its system, AMERTA collaborates with some local stakeholders, such as local government, financial institution, distribution partners and NGOs. The system is believed to be able to improve the quality of life of the local in such an underserved area by providing the most basic need: a source of safe drinking water.

Who is your customer?

AMERTA’s potential end market focused to low income families at underserved area in Indonesia which has difficulties in accessing drinking water.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

According to Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik), only 62.10% of Indonesia’s underserved areas get access to safe drinking water by 2017. This means there are more than 45 million people that do not get the access to safe drinking water, which commonly due to lack of both water and land infrastructures that are not enabling them to receive proper water for consumption. This lack of infrastructure spares limited amount of water sources in underserved areas. Based on AMERTA’s observation in one of Indonesia’s underserved areas in Oesusu Village (Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur), the primary water sources are from piped well and water springs, which they have to filter it more than three times and cook it for at least 5 hours using conventional wood-burning stove due to high amount of calcium substance found in the water. This costs them more than they realize: health issues such as upper respiratory tract infection, risk of kidney stones, and diarrhea which are caused by consuming the water, also time used for processing the water that can be utilized for other productive activities such as farming which contributes real economic value for them.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Our main attributes are affordable drinking water with integrated system from water pooling, facilities construction, water treatment, water distribution, and public health education related to drinking water quality. The system installed is centralized, which creates major cost saving for our operational activities. In order to keep this system sustainable,we collaborate with some local stakeholders, such as local government, financial institution, distribution partners and NGO. We are certain this system could improve life quality of people living in underserved areas by providing the most basic need: affordable and accessible safe drinking water.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

AMERTA consists of five members specializing in several majors background. Maizkha is our key member with experience in social and community development. Wynn is our key member with experience in finance and operations. Adela is our key member with experience in design and digital campaign for marketing. Carissa is our key member with experience in public health as well as engagement for charity contributors and CSR partners. Maria is our key member with experience in developing social marketing to the communities.
