Circalux: Smarter Nightlights

Abstract

Circalux was founded as a C corporation in June 2016 with the goal of improving sleep hygiene for hospital patients. We designed a smart and portable LED light to become the standard illumination for nighttime care and diminish light pollution in patient rooms. A single hospital facility in the Netherlands spent $120 million to address this problem. As a lean startup, we are initially only entering the consumer market, and once we have developed our consumer sales and also validated the device in the home, we plan to target institutional sales.

The consumer smart LED wellness market is estimated at $15 billion/year. Our target market is the consumer that could benefit from a smarter night-light, such as parents who wake often to care for a young child, overnight caregivers, and even those who take repeated nocturnal pilgrimages to the bathroom. In the coming months, we plan to continue iterating and testing our prototype until we are ready to manufacture at scale. Our current goals are to strengthen consumer verification, finalize device iterations, and obtain pre-seed funding. Better lighting, better health - Circalux!

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

Our target market is the consumer that could benefit from a smarter night-light, such as parents who wake often to care for a young child, overnight caregivers, and even those who take repeated nocturnal pilgrimages to the bathroom. Anyone who is health-conscious who needs light at night is a potential customer. More value analysis-based hospital institutional market entry will follow consumer market entry (i.e. year 3).

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Our products feature longer wavelengths of light that have been scientifically proven to be less troublesome to human sleep physiology. Since we are adjusting light wavelength rather than its intensity, users have the light that they need with minimal circadian disruption. Circalux provides a nightlight for our modern lifestyle whose elegant design can be easily adapted to any setting. There is no product on the market that provides a low-cost automated and portable lantern focused on sleep physiology. We are entering a wellness market that recognizes many factors in health, including a respect for natural sleep patterns.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Our product is based on the extensive findings of scientific publications on circadian physiology in humans, the effect of different wavelengths of light on that physiology, and the effect of night-time light pollution and disruption of sleep on health. Current trends in circadian applications (e.g. iphone wavelength-shifting, depression light therapy, aerospace lighting upgrades) is highly suggestive of consumer interest and future success.
