Dent-Aid

Abstract

3.9 billion people suffer from untreated dental problems which could lead to major systemic issues. Oral pathology affect about 70% to 95% of the populations in South America, Asia, and Africa. Sadly, in third world countries, most would rather buy food for their families than toothbrushes and toothpastes.

Dent-Aid is a simple band-aid size, biodegradable, toothbrush with a miswak fluoride infused brush that can wrap around a finger.

Our goal is to offer preventative measures to dental issues by providing Dent-Aid for only $20 a box per person for an years supply (730 Dent-Aid in a box). Our product will relieve and offer more people an affordable option to take care of their oral health.

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

Our customer is essentially anyone with dentition. Our focus is to have Dent-Aid available in emergency kits for emergency relief and to the 3.9 billion people who do not have adequate dental care. In every emergency kit we have come across, there were always every available except for oral care. Other medical problems do come first, but having one box of Dent-Aid will let many people have an option to brush their teeth without water. We also want to send out boxes of Dent-Aid to third world countries. We feel this is the next hygienic option available for the market. *Our products can also be used in school, jails, disability center, camping resources, first aid kits etc.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

We need to see this from two different aspects: the eyes of people not struggling to live day-to-day and the eyes of people living in areas where water and resources are scarce. For people not living day-to-day, Dent-Aid offers an environmental friendly alternative to the conventional toothbrush. About 1 billion plastic toothbrushes, equivalent to 50 million pounds of waste, are thrown in the trash. Our product is completely biodegradable, from the packaging to the bristles. We should always lead to more environmental friendly measures to protect out world. Also, its simply packaging allows busy individuals to carry disposable packages to use once and discard. For those living in areas water and resources are very limited, Dent-Aid offers the most hygienic way for them to take care of their oral health. If they had conventional toothbrushes, after brushing, there is no way to wash the bristles because the water would be essentially wasted. Even rinsing the toothbrush with water will not remove most of the bacteria, imagine letting it be without washing it. Dent-Aid is a one-time use replacement to the conventional toothbrush and no water is needed. Every package is sealed tight to prevent bacterial growth. Once opened and used, the individual simply needs to throw it away and use a brand new Dent-Aid for the next brushing session. Again, the product is biodegradable so there will be minimal environmental impact

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Large dental companies annually bring out new expensive high-technology toothbrushes with Bluetooth and so many different modes it is hard to keep track with. We are trying to be simple and look for the next way to maintain one’s oral health. Dent-aid is cost friendly, simple, and very basic. Individuals can take a weeks-worth almost anywhere or they can have emergency packages in one’s cars or purses. Without the need of water or an extra plastic toothbrush carrier, our product is so convenient. Especially in third world countries our product to be different and stand-out.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

I have been to over 10 different countries in medical missions and I realized there is a need for our product. My partner, Joshua Baek is currently is in University of Dental School in San Francisco and he has talked to many dentist about this product and everyone say they will use it in their humanitarian mission trips.Joshua will continue the research on the effectiveness of the product. Once we are approved by the ADA, we will be able to serve everyone around the world. There is nothing like this currently in the market. Regular toothbrushes have to be thrown away after 2 months use and toothpaste don't contain enough fluoride. Also brushing teeth hard makes the enamel slowly go away. We will introduce ourselves to the emergency kits. If we are able to squeeze a small box into each and every emergency kit, this will promote our product very well. Also, after we mass produce the product, we will be in the front-lines of areas in need of emergency relief. We have an advantage over others in the oral hygiene market because we are able to provide tens of thousands of people a temporary solution because our product is so simple and easy to transport. No need to ship thousands of plastic toothbrushes and toothpastes. 1000 boxes of Dent-Aid will provide oral care for 50,000 for one week. Dent-Aid has the possibility to help millions for a low price.
