The Get Shifty Project

Abstract

We have developed a modular attachment for a standard multi-gear bicycle that will shift gears automatically while the rider pedals. Our goal is to patent the device, then sell the production and usage rights to existing bicycle-oriented businesses.

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

We are targeting customers who are interested in commuting by bike and spending some extra money to make that commute significantly easier and safer. Think of the kind of person who lives on a college campus or in the city, where it may be too far to walk from place to place, but driving is either inconvenient or not an option. However, in both these scenarios there is still car traffic to compete with, which is where an automatic shifter can make your ride safer.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

What if I told you that most people don’t know how to properly ride a bike? Sure, they may be able to pedal from place to place, but we’ve realized that most people don’t use their bike to its full potential. Many riders do not use their gear shifter while riding, making their ride more difficult than it has to be.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

The Get Shifty team is made up of a group of U of I engineers of different concentrations. We have done the testing and put in the time to make a working prototype of a bike module that controls your bike’s gear system for you. It’s like the automatic transmission in your car, but for your bike. By backing this project, you support lowering the difficulty and increasing the safety of biking.
