ZikAway is a fashionable braided bracelet made from water hyacinth with the added feature of repelling insects through citronella oil. Most mosquito repellents in the Philippine market contain DEET (diethyltoluamide), a toxic chemical. Therefore, the business will utilize organic citronella oil and invasive plants to create a product that can protect the environment, prevent mosquito-borne diseases, and provide sustainable livelihood.

Who is your customer?

The business aims to target tourists in the Philippines who are vulnerable to mosquito-borne diseases during their travels. Western tourists are proven to be more vulnerable to mosquito bites due to their genetic make-up. Furthermore, the product is especially attractive to tourists who are looking for purposeful souvenirs from their travels.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

The product is able to solve the dangerous problem tourists fear which are mosquito-borne diseases. Malaria, dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and zika virus are only some of the most deadly diseases caused by mosquitoes. Therefore, the business aims to provide a simple solution that can protect its consumers from a very serious problem.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

ZikAway's competitive advantage is its eco-friendly, cultural design that safely and effectively protects its consumers from mosquito-borne diseases. Its continuous improvement in design will attract customers to patronize our brand. It can be used by anyone from ages 5 and up. Ultimately, the business' innate purpose to provide sustainable livelihood for the poor will be the key motivation for the business owners and its customers.

The team is composed of top students in the fields of Marketing and Entrepreneurship who aims to continuously improve the design and product line to cater to the different preferences and changing needs of the target market. Furthermore, the team is fully dedicated in turning the business into a reality. ZikAway has been shortlisted in both national and international competitions and has won awards in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The team believes that ZikAway is more than just a business concept because ZikAway has a purpose. A purpose to help, to build lives, and make a difference.
