PET Bottle Recycling Plant

With thousands of tons of waste generated every day, Bangladesh is one of the largest garbage producers in the world. Tens of thousands of scavengers make a living in the country by collecting saleable items from open-air dumps in very poor, informal conditions. Amidst this challenging situation, the founders of BPCL saw an opportunity: the opportunity to add value to the plastic collected and close the value chain of recycling by making a link between the scavengers and the bottling industry through the construction of the first PET recycling facility with sophisticated technology in Bangladesh. This innovative project is designed to improve the scavengers’ working conditions – including reintegrating them into the formal economy, reducing child labor, and increasing popular awareness about the importance of recycling, while at the same time generating a profit for the company through the sale of the recycled material. The project will benefit the environment by diverting discarded PET bottles away from the landfills and water bodies and contributing to controlling the emissions of green house gasses.

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

Bottle Maker for Beverage and Mineral Water companies, Packaging companies & Polyester Yarn manufacturers.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Bottles in South Asia/Bangladesh are very dirty due to no formal discard procedure, making it difficult to produce high quality food grade PET resin from these dirty bottles. After spending over a year on R&D and research, BPCL have perfected the process by utilizing state-of-the-art washing and cleaning facilities, along with a de-molecurization process to produce food grade resin.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Import Substitute: PET bottle manufacturing industry of Bangladesh was fully dependent on imported PET resins until BPCL provided bottle makers the option to source PET resins locally. BPCL is thus helping the country save valuable foreign currency as well. Ready Market for its Products: Bangladesh imports 142,000 MT of PET and the demand is growing by more than 20% a year. Producing 10,000 MT of PET resins at full capacity BPCL enjoys a ready and growing market to absorb its products. BPCL is currently supplying flakes and resin to local bottling plant, PET sheet and Synthetic (Polyester) Fiber manufacturers.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

Our team has already proven that we can produce high quality resin comparable to virgin resin (produced from petroleum). We can produce Polyester Yarn from our recycled resin adding few more step. We already produced raw materials from the Yarn, that gives significant advantage over our competitors.
