ShambaShare

Abstract

ShambaShare, will be a startup that is legally registered in Kenya as an incorporated company. The startup will hold land from land owners in the country inform of agreements and the land owners will give consent for the land to be used by other people. The startup will then issue the land to the youth for them to invest on. This way the youth will be able to access government funding and government loans.

ShambaShare will also train the youth on good farming practices and provide farming equipment and seeds. The startup will also source for market for the farm produce. This farming model will increase the yield and amount of money earned from a certain piece of land

From the proceeds, the land owner will be given a prescribed percentage of the profits and the youth will keep the rest of the profit after paying for service rendered by ShambaShare. This practice will increase the amount of money earned by a land owner and will have reduced unemployment in the country.

Who is your customer?

Shambashare will connect the prospective farmers, lessees, lessors i.e the Land Owners and the market and ensure real time information asymmetry in the agricultural value chain.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Shambashare will be involved in doing the following: -To provide a platform for funding for Agribusiness for small scale farmers -To connect lessors and lessees of land who intend to engage is agribusiness -Support youth in doing agriculture through employment at the grass root levels.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

Shambashare’ s business model is based on connecting needs of the various stakeholders in Agricultural value chain and offering solutions to the barriers preventing the youth from engaging in Agriculture. The landowner wants to earn lucrative income rates from the from the farm that he owns through leasing. Farmers are in need of quality land to invest while also needing financing for their farming activities. Through interactions with these stakeholders, Shambashare has identified opportunities that will ensure strategic value for all the value chain stakeholders at a relatively low investment. The opportunity the company has opted to invest in is the establishment of a platform, with the following key objectives in mind: - 1. Creating a credible market for leasing agricultural land in Kenya. 2. Diversify and improve household incomes for the middleclass by pooling funds to engage in agriculture with the promise of a return every season/month. 3. Foray into job creation by supporting youth farming initiatives in the country by training youth and offering them access to finance. 4. Establish a firm foundation for diversifying the business in future – through such opportunities as processing and value addition etc

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

The company was founded in 2017 by its 5 visionaries graduate students who were seeking to apply their knowledge in both farming and engineering to transform the sector. The founders of Shambashare have been farming since primary school. Their experience includes planting of maize, beans, cabbages, Sukuma wiki, chilies, green capsicums with some measure of success. They have also diversified into poultry farming and a hatchery and extending their reach in the value chain by marketing their produce and poultry products. In addition, they have provided hatching services and education to farmers on appropriate practices. They have also been involved in a project called Nelion which develops and prototypes software for farm use.
