Salt Lake City Urban Aquaponics


Greenhouse aquaponic's is the sustainable cultivation of organic crops and fish near urban environments. This process reduces the need for agriculture inputs such as pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and water by 90% by utilizing the symbiotic relationship between the fish and the plants. The fish produce ammonium, which then produces the nitrites needed for plant growth. The water containing the nitrites is then pumped through irrigation systems directly to the plant's root systems. In conjunction with the high levels of efficiency from within the aquaponic system, I will also be adding an open-sourced robotic system that will be responsible for seeding and sustaining the next generation of plants.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Today, 54 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 66 percent by 2050. Meanwhile, the demand for naturally and sustainably grown organic produce and plant products within these urban areas continue to increase dramatically. The world needs a more efficient solution to the continuing problems plaguing the agriculture industry such as; GMO crops, drought, plagues, erosion, deforestation, toxic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. This innovative agriculture allows the grower to closely monitor the plants nutrient intake, providing a much more precise way to cultivate crops. This precision decreases the risk and variability associated with conventional farming, such as drought, flooding, and plagues. That provides this method with a competitive advantage in the marketplace when conducting business with restaurants or grocery stores who depend on reliability.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

This sustainable system is up to 90% more efficient and can produce more than 10X the yield per acre than conventional farming, utilizing multiple tiers to increase efficiency within the greenhouse. The robotic Farmbot will cut costs further, with its innovative technology it can plant the seeds for the next generation and precisely water them until they are ready to be rotated into production. Together, these features create one of the most sustainable and efficient growing methods ever produced.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

The innovative Farmbot technology has recently just been released to the public and therefore will provide a first-movers advantage to me when designing my greenhouse to maximum efficiency. With my extensive knowledge and passion for nutrition and nature, working alongside my knowledge on how to efficiently and effectively operate a business, I believe I bring the necessary knowledge and ambition to this company in order to make it a successful model of urban farming worldwide.
