Healing Lesvos

Abstract

The economic crisis has hit hard and while Greece is trying to recover, a social humanitarian crisis marches right across. The island of Lesvos is distressed and to fix our troubles we designed the concept for a Living Lab. A Living Lab is defined as a user-centered, open innovation ecosystems based on a systematic user co-creation approach integrating research and innovation processes in real life communities and settings. In practice, Living Labs place the different stakeholders at the center of innovation, and have thus shown the ability to better mold the opportunities offered by new concepts and solutions to the specific needs and aspirations of local contexts, cultures, and creativity potentials.

What attributes will make this idea/product successful? Why do you believe that those features will create success?

We believe that Design Thinking, Human Centered Design and Business Case Development are key in this process to help shape the NEW desirable, feasible and viable Lesvos of tomorrow together. To gain the trust and support of communities we need to start small and more or less independent. The service we provide is complementary to other initiatives and because it has ‘creating opportunities to collaborate on healing Lesvos with new business cases’ as end goal in a setting that calls for engagement it can sincerely succeed. Plus, by reporting on the LIVING LAB in the press and on the web (making the Living lab visible by sharing the efforts and insights of individuals, businesses and organizations), we invite anyone to participate; who can motivate and inspire a proactive attitude. Spread the word and action.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

A Living Lab is executed in four steps: 1. LISTENING - Formalize our initiative as organization and continue meeting stakeholders - to collect ideas and start mapping social, economic and ecological problems and challenges; 2. ENGAGE -After setting up a proper infrastructure for our organization, different stakeholders will be able to find each other, participate in our events and easily collaborate on ideas and start new business cases; 3. IMPLEMENT - Initiate and execute exemplary cases by implementing these solutions to start learning and creating value by doing; 4. SHARE - Use exemplary cases to learn from and inspire. Share and discuss the next challenge to activate At the moment we think this could be done by formalizing our proposed collaboration as a non-profit organization to start organizing events where stakeholders and potential problem solvers can meet. The goal is to invite, facilitate and encourage anyone to participate in a better Lesvos. The means are: Design Thinking, Business Case Development and proper marketing to promote the big idea we want people to follow. i.e. Events like a summer school at the Aegean University, could bring problem solvers from all over the world and Greece to Lesvos - to collaborate, share their knowledge, and promote their own solutions for Our new Lesvos directly to stakeholders. Or, an event similar to, The Extreme Tech Challenge which is combined with a kite boarding event by MaiTai Global would bring a different, but equally positive attitude to Lesvos. MaiTai is an organization which combines their energy, network of entrepreneurs and resources to help each other achieve professional success, pushing the limits of work and play while also fueling philanthropic activities around the world and giving back to the World.
