Near-surface winds (i.e. below 300 m.) are highly intermittent, while high-altitude wind resources are abundant, stronger and more consistent. For this reason, Bill Gates has been quoted as saying that High- Altitude wind energy has a chance to be the “magic” solution to the world’s energy crisis. We are

developing an Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) system that can harvest both near-surface and high-altitude winds using only 5% of materials compared to state-of-the-art wind turbines. The superior design and drastic reductions in weight can open entirely new markets for wind energy and reduce the cost of electricity by at least 50% upon market entry. This technology can be economically scaled from a 2kW system into multi-megawatt farms.
